This may be due to several factors (in the descending order of the likeliness for the problem)

1. The bandwidth of your internet connection. Do you have FiOS, Cable, DSL Cellular or dial-up? Are you using Wi-Fi? 
1. Even within the broadband connections, you have varying speeds from different ISP vendors depending on how much you are paying them.
2. Typical Speeds (Download/Upload Speeds):
• Dial-up 56k (56.0/48.0 kbps)
• DSL (3000/768 kbps)
• Cable (40,000/30,000 kbps)
• FiOS (50,000/10,000 kbps)
3. Typical Cellular Speeds (Download/Upload Speeds):
• AT&T: GSM (14.4 kbps)
• Verizon: 1xEV-DO (3,100/1,800 kbps)
4. Typicall Wi-Fi Speeds (distance to router makes a difference as well)
• 802.11b (11Mbps)
• 802.11g (54Mbps)
• 802.11n (248Mbps)
2. The size of the files that you are downloading. Larger the files, the longer it takes.
1. Common File Sizes:
• Favorite Song 5MB
• Movie Trailer 6MB
• Vacation Photos 12MB
• Software Application 60MB
• Video Game Demos 125MB
• Movie 750MB
3. The speed of your computer processor, amount of RAM you have vs the kind of OS you are running. XP is lighter than Vista, in terms of the amount of memory they occupy out of your existing memory.
4. Do you have any viruses on your PC? These could be slowing down your PC performance, not just while downloading but in general. You may notice it only during downloading because it is one of the most intensive jobs on a typical computer.
5. Amount of free disk-space left on your hard drive. For optimal performance, you should have left at least 10% free space on your hard drive. Otherwise anything and everything on your PC becomes extremely slow.

There are multiple ways to resolve this issue.

Deleted Applicaitons still trying to run:

1. Use Microsoft Add/Remove programs
1. Go to Control Panel and Click on Add/Remove programs.
2. Uninstall all programs that you either do not need or that you do not recognize.
   
2. I recommned CCleaner in addition to Microsofts Add/Remove Programs.

Auto Startup at Windows Start:

1. Use Microsoft Config options
1. Click on the Start button and click on Run. Type msconfig and hit enter key.
2. Look at the Start up programs tab and uncheck those that you do not want to run at start up.
